Established on August 4, 1790, the Coast Guard saves lives at sea, provides maritime security, and enforces America’s maritime laws. It is one of the longest-serving organizations in the federal government. The Coast Guard operates under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security during peacetime and under the U.S. Department of Defense during times of war.
The Coast Guard’s official motto is Semper Paratus, or “Always Ready”.
